Internal Conflict in The Crucible
Directions:
A. As John prepares to finally reveal his secrets to save his wife in Act III, choose any song that you think allows us as readers to dive into the internal conflict of ONE character in The Crucible Act II.
B. Choose one stanza or line from that song to dissect, pick apart and connect to the character's inner thoughts (we will never know these thoughts, because it's a play! You'll have to inference!)
Example:
Ex--Elizabeth Proctor
Song-Adele--"Take it All" by Adele
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snU9vQNOkHw&list=RD02snU9vQNOkHw
Song Lyrics:
Didn't I give it all,
Tried my best,
Gave you everything I had,
Everything and no less?
Didn't I do it right?
Did I let you down?
But go on and take it,
Take it all with you.
Don't look back
At this crumbling fool.
Just take it all
With my love,
Take it all
With my love.
Analysis:
At the opening of Act III, Elizabeth must be waiting inside the dark jail cell, cramped with the other accused witches, thinking about her mistakes, her life and especially, John. I wonder if she feels betrayed as Adele does, when all she did was be a wife who was loyal, dutiful, bearing children. Adele says “Didn't I give it all,/Tried my best,/Gave you everything I had,/Everything and no less?”
She says "Take it, take it all" as John has not only stolen her dignity by humiliating her with his affair with Abigail; his stupid mistake, moments of lust, might cost Elizabeth her life. Her pride, her husband and her life may be taken by lust. Elizabeth says, "She wants me dead John, you know it! (60). Take it all, take it all—will Elizabeth give her life to Abigail? Will she forfeit or stay true to her moral code?
TRATIOR -OLVIA RODRIGO
ReplyDeleteYou betrayed me
'Cause I know that you'll never feel sorry
For the way I hurt, yeah
You talked to her when we were together
You gave me your word, but that didn't matter
TRAITOR BY OLIVA RODRIGO relates to Elizabeth in many ways when she found out that John had forgotten the 7th commandment and had gotten to Salem to see Abigail and was in the room alone with her . ELIZABETH, “delicately: Adultery, John”. Elizabeth is a holy person with a big heart and is very religious and doesn’t deserve John and never had done John wrong in any way . Even though John claims to love Elizabeth he sinned with his mind, heart5 and mouth and hurt Elizabeth and by this John could become a widow if Elizabeth is guilty .
I agree with you because Elizabeth got betrayed and hurt by John leading him to be a traitor just like the song title.

She is half your age
But i,m guessing thats the reason that you strayed
Thread you've been missing me
You've been telling people thigs you shouldn't be like when we creep out when she ain't around
Haven't you heard the rumors ?
( bless your soul)
Bless your soul, you've head in the clouds you made a fool out of me and , boy, you're bringing me down
You made my heart melt , yet i,m cold to the core but rumor has it , I'm the one you're leaving her for. Rumor has it
Towards the end of Act 2 elizabeth burns with rage but she tries her best to keep flame low instead she says the " magistrate that sit in John's chest " is his harshest judge. She is mad that he is not taking proper responsibility for committing adultery and he has put it so far back into his mind ; he was able to forget the 10 commandments for adultery . When Adele says " Bless your soul, you've got your head in the clouds you made a fool out of me and , boy, you're bringing me down. She says "you are not honest with me john" because he has not fully confessed why he cheated on Elizabeth. Since he is not honest with himself about the affair . In result it caused elizabeth to be wrongfully accused of bewitching the children .
This is basically a summary of a plot point in a few words. I think this matches perfectly. I love the analysis as well.

The song perfectly depicts the scene and the sentimental feelings of what might Elizabeth be feeling. Your analysis is well written and has a connection!

I think this song is a perfect fit. When the song says how the girl is half your age, it relates to John more since he is way older than Abigail. I also like your analysis and the way you connected the songs Resentment to Elizabeth's resentment in the book

The Other Woman - Cover by Lana Del Rey
ReplyDeleteAbigail Williams
The other woman has time to manicure her nails
The other woman is perfect where her rival fails
And she's never seen with pin curls in her hair anywhere
The other woman enchants her clothes with French perfume
The other woman keeps fresh cut flowers in each room
And there are never toys that's scattered everywhere
And when her old man comes to call
He finds her waiting like a lonesome queen
'Cause to be by her side
It's such a change from old routine
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
The other woman will always cry herself to sleep
The other woman will never have his love to keep
And as the years go by, the other woman will spend her life alone
Alone
At the confrontation between Abigail and Proctor after Abigail’s 7 months of pining and John’s dishonor, John claims that he does not love Abigail. After the confrontation, she must feel betrayed. Abigail clearly recollects the times where she and Proctor were “in love” and questions whether anything was real. This feeling of betrayal translates to immense jealousy for Elizabeth, the woman who gets to be by her side at all times, while she has to be the other woman who was abandoned just when she was no longer needed. Lana Del Rey, in her cover of “The Other Woman,” says, “The other woman will always cry herself to sleep. The other woman will never have his love to keep. And as the years go by, the other woman will spend her life alone." Abigail, after the cold confrontation, is met with the fact that she will never be as important to John as Elizabeth is, and she will never earn his eternal love and care. Her love for John Proctor rots into complete ruthlessness and obsession towards the one hindering their love, namely Elizabeth. This manifests in the story when Abigail goes to extreme lengths to accuse and condemn Elizabeth, because in her adolescent mind, Abigail believes that the only factor hindering John’s love is Elizabeth.
This is actually so good. I love how you chose a song that matches this situation so well. Your analysis is explained beautifully and I agree with you 100%. Justice for Abigail!!!!!
DeleteI love the analysis and how you took this character and explained her actions in a way others can see why Abigail acted this way.

ReplyDeleteSong, "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" by Chicago
// Hold me now
It's hard for me to say I'm sorry
I just want you to know
Hold me now
I really wanna tell you I'm sorry
I could never let you go
After all that we've been through
I will make it up to you, I promise to
And after all that's been said and done
You're just a part of me, I can't let go \\
Analysis, the song seems to reflect accurately upon Proctor's struggles, feelings and thoughts regarding his relationship with Elizabeth. It is difficult for him as a married man living in a very religious society to straight up apologize and confess for the wrong he has done to his wife by committing adultery and breaking a commandment, because of the guilt and frustration he already feels about the situation. If anyone else knew about his affair with Abigail Williams, his entire reputation would be ruined and he is afraid of that happening, so he is fixed upon not admitting to the full extent of the wrong that he has done. However, at the end of Act II Proctor had a lot of trouble and got angry seeing Elizabeth being chained and taken away from him because she was falsely charged with attempted murder. Although he may struggle to properly apologize to his wife for his mistakes, I think Proctor still does love her deep down and he knows Abigail and her jealousy is behind the entire scheme to get Elizabeth in trouble, so he plans to make it up to his wife by confessing and turning himself in for his wrongdoing in order to prove that she is in fact innocent. He desperately wants to fix the situation, to please Elizabeth and get back on her good side and convince her to forgive him, even though he cannot seem to entirely forgive himself and chase away the constant guilt and pain that hangs over him. Proctor assures her, “I will bring you home. I will bring you soon.” (77). So, it is possible to me that Proctor's plan to combat his internal conflicts is to win back Elizabeth's trust, and her respect by making everything up to her through telling the truth and attempting to redeem himself for her which the song sums up really well.
This analysis was in such great detail I wouldn’t have to read the book in order to understand . I love that you added emotion to your writing.

ReplyDeleteSong: The River - Bruce Springsteen
Now all them things that seemed so important,
Well, mister, they vanished right into air,
Now I act like I don't remember,
The lyrics connect to John Proctor & Elizabeth through the conflict of Johns affair. The Lyrics connect to Johns mistake in a moment of lust where he forgot what was truly important to him. It also connects to him in his attempt to brush it off and forget about it. Johns internal guilt of the situation would come back to bite him as he tries to suppress his memory and when he is asked by Hale to recite his commandments he forgets the very one he violated: "He is stuck. He counts back on his fingers, knowing one is missing." John tried to suppress his memory of the affair and denied it happened so much to the point that he failed to recite his commandments properly and would put further suspicion on himself and Elizabeth's devotion to Christianity.
This is a really good analysis! I feel like the lyrics match up John’s feeling of guilt very well with his mistake and you explained it perfectly - Brandon
DeleteI like how you tied this song to how John's internal guilt and how he forgets the things that are important to him. John forgetting the same commandment that he broke is a perfect example of this and you did a good job to tie the song back to that. Nice job!

ReplyDelete"Note to you"- Mariah the Scientist
You know i used to love you
maybe i still do, but i put you in my rear-view
Cause i can never trust you, that's fundemental
But baby thats what fear do to you
i hope it was worth it
This part of "Note to you" connects to Elizabeth proctor because in act 2 procotor's actions ended up reflecting on both him and Elizabeth. What he did has now come back and has led to Elizabeth being being accused of witchcraft. Throughout all of this Elizabeth is probably feeling betrayed by John. She's not sure wether she could trust him or not anymore, not only because of the past but because of the way he's heisitant of telling the truth for her name to b cleared. Which is why the line " i hope it was worth it" is important because all this is a direct effect of John's affair, meaning it didn't only effect her emotionaly. And she no longer knows whether to trust him anymore, or if her love for him still stands how it used too.
Ms Leylee, I agree with you such a great artist choice. Free young thug, not also are you bringing attention to false accusation and the jail system, your correlating it to how the Salem Witch Trials worked compared to the fraud decisions the judge in the Young Thug Case has been making, because Mariah is infact Young Thugs lady. I enjoy how you used fear as fear is a repeating factor within the characters decisions, and develops the plot ultimately. Good Job Ms. Leylee.
DeleteI like how you connected the analysis to the song, and I think the song you chose fits Elizabeth well on how she feels about her relationship with her husband.
DeleteShawn Mendes - Mercy
ReplyDeleteI need you to set me free
I'm begging you for mercy, mercy
Begging you, begging you, please
At the end of Act II, Mary Warren has brought news to the Proctors about Elizabeth's name coming up in court. Later on, Elizabeth is arrested by the court for witchcraft because Abigail accused her of spiritually stabbing her with a needle that was in a poppet. John Proctor becomes furious and aggressively grabs Mary and tells her she will testify against Abby. Mary proceeds to beg for mercy, like Shawn Mendes says "I'm begging you for mercy". This song reflects Mary's actions because all she wants is to be free and live a happy life. However, she is now stuck in a conflict with the court and she just wants it to end.
I really like this! I love how it also works for multiple people. When I first read this I thought it was about John internally begging for Elizabeth to tell the truth to set him free but Mary works super well with this too!

DeleteI agree with Justin because John is trying to tell Mary to testify against Abigail but she cant because if she does testify against her Abigail and the others will turn on her.
DeleteThis song really embodies Mary’s thought process as you said. You can even see and connect both the song and Mary in the book. The begging in the song is emphasized by constant repetition in the lower portion while Mary in the book is crying and begging for Abigail to forgive her and even goes as far to turn her back on Proctor for Abigail

At the end of Act II, John is convinced to do anything to get Elizabeth back from being arrested. these lines from the song symbolize how Elizabeth felt after the fact she learned that john cheated on her with Abigail, which just so happens to be the same person that is out to arrest her. These lyrics are what she felt like. And now John is trying to win her back, he will do this by confessing what happened, this will ruin his reputation, but his love for elizabeth is what makes him committed to doing this.
I like this and I could see how the songs lyrics can show how John proctor had to take action I think?
DeleteFuture - Sorry ( HNDRXX Album )
ReplyDeleteShawty so phony, I got somethin' to prove
Work every day like I got somethin' to lose
In Sorry, Mr. Hendrix is talking about infidelity and how he's regretting cheating. This song was a apology letter to his Ex, Ciara; With such a high-profile relationship, rumors circulated and it was rumored Mr. Hendrix was cheating on his lover, whom he had a child with. Mr. Hendrix said " Work every-day like I got somethin' to lose", and this is referring to his fame and status because he's undisputedly the best rapper of all time. Future is talking about how he has something to lose ( Reputation & Money ).
In the Crucible nearing the end of Act 2 and dawn of Act 3, Abigail is still blood-driven to be John Proctor's lady. Ms. Williams had intentions to strengthen her case even more by planting a needle in a Poppet, that Mary Warren had crafted it during the courthouse. This poppet was then given to Elizabeth Proctor by MW, and by coincidence with the rumor cooking about Elizabeth being a suspect. It just so happened to be that Abigail had a needle in her and she blamed Elizabeth prior to this; This invoked a search-warrant of Elizabeth's house. Cheever, a officer had searched and found the poppet with the needle inside. This made voodoo a prime cause of what happened to Abigail. John Proctor knows how manipulative Abigail gets and he knew she planted it. This entitles Abigail to be phony in Proctor's mind. John Proctor made Mary Warren turn on the mob of girls, and build a case on how Abigail is a fraud. He has to prove this to save his wife's and friends life because he doesn't want to see Rebecca Nurse and others die.
The efforts Proctor has shown in trying to prove Abigail's fraud is a indicator of how much work in he puts in to save his wife even though he's at fault for why she's even in this situation due to the false thought he gave Abigail after having intercourse with her, lechery basically. It's pretty clear what John Proctor has to lose, his wife and two kids. He also holds a reputation in Salem because he obtains a plethora of acres, and that's a indicator of wealth. It must require much work to uphold all that land, ultimately showing how John relates to these lyrics.
This in my opinion this was by far the best song choice and analysis out of everyone in this whole blogger, outstanding job Joaquin.

I chose this song because just like John Proctor the artist of the song was going through a rough part of his relationship, but didnt want it to end. This relates to John Proctors relationship with Elizabeth because in the book Elizabeth found out about his affair with Abigail and John feels guilty so he tries to turn the tables on her so he can feel less guilty..However at the same time he doesnt want to end his relationship with his wife so he is trying to talk to her about his mistake and acknowledges it.

"The seconds we called it quits?
And aint it funny
How you said we were friends
Now it sure as hell dont look like it
You betrayed me
And I know you'll never feel sorry
For the way I hurt, yeah,"
Analysis: At the end of Act 2 Mary doesn't want to go to court to tell the truth because she says that “they’ll turn on me” indicating that her friends will turn on her by telling the court what she has done too. “How you said you were friends? Now it sure as hell don't look like it” means that if she went to court and told the truth Mary and her friends will no longer be friends and they will rat her out meaning that they betrayed her and that relates to the line “ You betrayed me”
I like how the lyrics you chose relates to the ideas of friends and betraying each other, which is really what Mary's internal conflict is all about. I could see how Abigail and the other girls betrayed Mary. I wonder what would have happened if they didn't try doing that.

We waste our time with less fruitful flings
You shut the door, I locked it tight
Turn out the lights, no fun tonight,
removed your hands, no fun tonight\\
also,
//Have mercy one me\\
Analysis:
This song connects to John Proctor and it shows how it is a new time, but things are different. As the lyrics say "my hair tied up like it's bricks and strings", it relates to Proctor because his head is swirling around the guilt he's feeling and it been bunched up and he can't fix himself up. Also, as the description describes the relation between the song singer and the person they're describing, John and Elizabeth love each other, but there's a powerful tension between them that can't be bridged easily or soon. Also Proctor asks for Elizabeth to have some leniance or "mercy" on him because of all the things that have wen't down in the past 8 months.
I like your analysis. I definitely agree that the lyric about bricks and strings is connected to johns thoughts being conflicting. He is fighting for his reputation and helping his wife. The mercy john wishes to receive from her is also something that has a connection between the book and the song.

ReplyDeleteThe Last Time - Taylor Swift Ft Gary Lightbody
ReplyDeleteThis is the last time I'm asking you this
Put my name at the top of your list
This is the last time I'm asking you why
You break my heart in the blink of an eye, eye, eye
This is the last time you tell me I've got it wrong
This is the last time I say it's been you all along
This is the last time I let you in my door
This is the last time, I won't hurt you anymore
In the beginning of Act II the mood in the Proctor house is very cold. In the dialogue between Elizabeth and John we can see that Elizabeth has been persistently bugging John about him committing adultery with Abigail and cannot seem to get it out of her head. She is upset when John reveals to her that he lied earlier and was alone with Abigail for a brief period of time. John tells Elizabeth that he means to please her and that he's trying his best to fix their broken relationship “This is the last time I say it's been you all along… This is the last time I won't hurt you anymore.”. Elizabeth begs John to stop talking to Abigail and stop leading her on asking him to “put my name at the top of your list”. As we reach the end of Act II when Elizabeth is being arrested we finally see John putting his wife first and realize what he has to do to save her life, tell the court that he committed adultery with Abigail.

ReplyDeleteThis ain't what I want
This is something else
Something that ain't good for my health
And I been searching but I can't get no help
And I don't feel like myself
At the end of act ll, john proctor felt an immense amount of guilt after being the reason Elizabeth is in jail. His affair was the reason his wife is being accused of witchcraft. She is now going to be put in jail and then hanged for it. The song says “this is something else/ something that ain't good for my health” which relates to his guilt manifesting. When hale visits proctor to check how religious the family is, his guilt led to him forgetting his amendments: “Proctor: Thou shalt honor thy father and mother. Thou shalt not bear false witness. He is stuck. He counts back on his fingers, knowing one is missing. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image. Hale: You have said that twice, sir. Proctor, lost: Aye. He is failing for it. Elizabeth, delicately: Adultery, John” (67). His forgetful memory could cost him his wife's life since it makes Hale suspicious of them. Brent Faiyaz also says “ and i don't feel like myself” which relates to how john was determined to put aside his reputation to save his wife which is unlike him. John is a prideful man and he has managed to keep it a secret and still look good in front of others. His choice of exposing himself has shown how he isn't the same person he was at the beginning of the book.
I like how you connected the lyrics about "something" that isn't good for the artist's health with the guilt that John Proctor is feeling throughout the second act. The line in the song about searching but getting no help reminds me of John looking for ways to please Elizabeth because of his affairs at the beginning of Act II.
DeleteThis song shows how split John Proctor is when it comes to the affair. He is sorry for what he has done and he feels somewhat alienated because of it. He is the reason Elizabeth is in jail now and he has no way of getting her out besides confessing himself, “I been searching but I can’t get no help”. He is alone in this endeavor

Analysis :This song resonates with Abigail Williams because she is desperate to be with John Proctor, though he denies her time and time. Though time has passed, she is obsessed with the idea of rekindling her relationship with John and has gone to extreme measures to insure this. Despite her constant attempts John states "Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I'll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind.” Abigail remains persistent and accuses Elizabeth of being bewitched in hopes John will one day look for her again.

So don't let me, don't let me, don't let me down
D-Don't let me down
Analysis:
By the end of Act 2, Elizabeth was arrested because she was suspected to be a witch and attempting murder on Abigail. The song says “don’t let me, don’t let me down” which in Elizabeth’s situation, could mean how she was led into this situation because of John Proctor’s affair with Abigail. Elizabeth clearly doesn’t like any of this, but she wants to be a good puritan woman. This shows her internal conflict as she wants to forgive John for his affair, but she is disappointed because her life is now on the line and other people are also being suspected of witchcraft due to his affair. She and John know that Abigail and the other girls are falsely accusing people. She could only hope that John can help prove her innocence as well as ending this trial when John tells Elizabeth, "(John:) I will bring you home soon. (Elizabeth:) Oh, John, bring me soon!” (Miller, 77) as she was getting arrested.
I like how you chose to focus something other than Elizabeth's emotions towards John's affair, and I believe this song fits very well.

In Act II Elizabeth Proctor experiences a sense of betrayal when her husband, John Proctor, has an affair with Abigail Williams. Elizabeth express the feeling of being let down by someone who is her love which leads to the breakdown of trust in their relationship, she’s very calm but in the inside she wants no sympathy about it. “I have known her, sir. I have known her.” - Hans
I see what you did here Mr Dorlean the III, or II. Sorry if mistaken, but the line ''They got hoe tendency" really resonates with Mr Proctor. In the modern day, the brother would've got called a bop, in other words a bad word for a unfaithful man. John Proctor done cheated on his Goody lady, just for a little kid that aint holding it down for nobody or not even herself. Remarkable job , good job little bro.
DeleteGood choice of song btw.If Elizabeth was living in this time period we are living in right now I feel like she would be listening to this song when she is in her bag because when her and Proctor were arguing about the affair John was reluctant to admit that he is in the wrong leaving a hole in the relationship until they talked about it again.

ReplyDeleteSong : Grudge by Olivia Rodrigo
"Trust that you betrayed, confusion that still lingers
Took everything I loved and crushed it in between your fingers
And I doubt you ever think about the damage that you did
But I hold onto every detail like my life depends on it
My undying love, now I hold it like a grudge"
At the opening of Act ll we are shown the cold relationship between Elizabeth and Proctor. Proctor is obviously consumed by his guilt while Elizabeth appears to feel betrayed. I believe Elizabeth can relate to Olivia as they both feel betrayed yet are still in a way attached to that person. Olivia says “Trust that you betrayed, confusion that still lingers/My undying love, now I hold it like a grudge.” Elizabeth while confronting Proctor says with a smile, to keep her dignity: “John, if it were not Abigail that you must go to hurt, would you falter now? I think not.” Elizabeth feels that John has taken her dignity and betrayed her and can no longer trust in him regardless of what he says or does. The affair her husband had with Abigail put her in a difficult position as not only did she lose her relationship but later on she might even lose her own life due to the moments of lust between Abigail and her husband.
I love this! I think that using this song when theres multiple moments within the play where Elizabeth and John bring up there grudges they have against each other is a great connection.

(Look out for yourself)
My enemy-y-y-y-y
-------------------------------------------------------------
Analysis: Rebecca Nurse is perhaps the kindest of all towns people and has wronged no one with any of her actions. This however counterintuitively backfires as now the Putnam family absolutely despises her for the longevity of her children and her experience with kids letting her see through Abigail's lies and "silly seasons." People literally want to be her enemy. Rebecca doesn't have any lines in Act II but it is mentioned mockingly that she was charged with "murdering" Goody Putnam's babies. With the character background we have on Rebecca Nurse it's safe to say she feels wronged and taken advantage of in a horrid way. -Areg
WOW THIS SONG IS SO GOOD!!! Also I agree on how it connects with Rebecca Nurse because how Goody Putnam's consider Rebecca Nurse for letting her babies died, accusing her.

Am I a part of the cure?
Or am I part of the disease?
At the end of Act II, John comes to the decision that he and Mary Warren will go to Salem and confess everything that has happened, in order to free Elizabeth. When the song says, "Come back and take you home, I could not stop that you now know", it relates to how John feels to the need to go a rescue her from potentially getting hanged. He feels like he owes her that much, in which he does, especially since she now knows the truth of what John has done and how it has put her in the position she is in. When the song says, "Am I a part of the cure? Or am I part of the disease?" it talks about John's guilt for why all of this is happening and how he could resolve this my confessing. He has been like a disease for remaining silent and causing many to be imprisoned and set to hang, but he will now be like a cure since he is now going to give his two cents and confess his lechery.
love this song i think it goes perfect with the way you applied it!
DeleteI agree on John being a "cure" and "disease" since in the story he is portrayed as a character that is struggling to deal with his inner conflicts. In this scenario he gets to choose whether or not he is going to be the solution (cure) to this problem or not (disease).
DeleteIn Act 2, it is revealed that John calls Abigail a whore. From that, we can infer that he truly wants to redeem himself. That he no longer cares about his reputation but only for his wife to live. Similar to a lyric written by artist Boy Pablo, “Just let me have another chance. What a sick feeling to let you go my dear.”, John wants to go back and have another chance. Another chance to change his decision and tell the truth. To stop the affair he had with Abigail that caused this whole circumstance. Now he has to bear the feeling of seeing his wife possibly carrying his child rot in jail. And now letting her go because of what he commited in the beginning
ReplyDeleteI think this line works very well, and it can also be applied to John after telling Elizabeth about his infidelity and wanting to make it up to her and be given another chance for her affection.

Father, tell me if you can"
When Elizabeth is taken to court after being locked up on accusations of Witchcraft she is questioned about John Proctor and Abigail Willams, unaware of John Proctor having confessed, Elizabeth lies as to not arise conflict for her husband. We as readers know Abigail has never broken a commandment due to her "love" for God and yet she lied for her husband only. She prioritized him because for love for him is much deeper but she is aware she sinned. In the song "Young and Beautiful" by Lana del Rey in her lyric "Dear lord when I go to heaven Let me bring my man" depicts Elizabeths feelings as when she was in court she described him to be a good man, whose never done her wrong. "My husband--is a goodly man, sir." Although she's still upset about him committing adultery with Abigail she still wants to save him even if it costs her life. This cause an internal conflict within herself as she questions if she did the right thing and if it was worth committing a sin.
This connects amazingly!! I love how you made that connection and your analysis is well written!
DeleteI absolutely love this song choice!!!! I also completely agree with the way you decided to interpret Lana's lyrics into Elizabeth internal conflict and her complicated relationship with Proctor. I think Elizabeth would've loved Lana.
DeleteCareless Whisper by George Michael contains the lines "And I'm never gonna dance again Guilty feet have got no rhythm." John, who feels guilty for cheating on his wife is similar to this song. Specifically the part where he is asked by Hale to state the commandments and John is unable to remember the one commandment he broke. So the line stating guilty feet having no rhythm is John forgetting adultery as one of the commandments, while being able to name every other commandment. Now his guilt towards his wife has become so great to the point where he is willing to lose face in order to save his wife.
ReplyDeleteAmazing analysis! Even though many people chose the same character with similar explanation. You were able to connect it to your lyrics beautifully! - Brandon

"Don't hold my hand, don't beg me back
Don't say that we'll make it through this
Yeah, if I'm so beautiful, then why?
The doors we slammed, the plates we smashed
Echo with the sound of madness
I can't remember why we try"
Analysis:
In the script, it is apparent that John's affair is what is tearing the relationship apart. even after 7 months. In Act 2, we experience John and Elizabeth going back in fourth about John's guilt. John puts her frustrations onto Elizabeth and blaming her for not accepting his attempts to win her back. Elizabeth was villainized in this scene for something she simply cannot control.
The lines in the stanza surround a women who is in a not so perfect relationship, like Elizabeth. How can the Girl move on from her problem in the song, like Elizabeth. Back then, you weren't even given to chance to divorce. How can Elizabeth stay with the man who betrayed her trust with a younger woman? The line that stood out the most to me was "Don't say that we'll make it through this" because how could they make it through this?
The song you chose really connects to the idea you portray in your analysis as it goes well with how Elizabeth can’t move on from John’s betrayal
DeleteDoing it Wrong by Drake
ReplyDeleteWhen a good thing goes bad it's not the end of the world
It's just the end of a world, that you had with one girl
And she's the reason it happened, but she's overreacting
And it's all because she don't want things to change
Doing it wrong by Drake relates to John Proctor in Act II when Elizabeth had found out about the adultery John committed. The way she found out about this was when he didn't mention the 7th commandment. John had now felt like the relationship was ruined.. But at the same time that's not the end of the world. John may feel like she's overreacting or even that she's the reason why this happened. Maybe he started losing feelings that it would lead him to decide to have an affair with a teen.
Love the song choice! I find it interesting the way you interpreted this, definitely a creative perspective
DeleteBest song I seen anyone post in here just because it’s drake, but this song resonates with the ignorant perspective of john when he’s arguing with Elizabeth since he only seems himself in the right and her in the wrong
DeleteI really love this song and I agree with this because Elizabeth felt like it was the end of the world when she found out John committed adultery.
DeleteI like the song choice and connection to the story. The lyrics really bring out John's emotions that are seen through Act ll. Bringing out where he is coming from/thinking when speaking to Eilzabeth.

ReplyDeleteElizabeth
You and I walk a fragile line
I have known it all this time
But I never thought I'd live to see it break
It's getting dark and it's all too quiet
And I can't trust anything now
And it's coming over you like it's all a big mistake
Oh, I'm holding my breath
Won't lose you again
At the start of Act II, it is described that there are tensions between Elizabeth and Proctor as they speak. Even when he goes to kiss her "She receives it. With a certain disappointment." The cause of the cold relationship is because of John's infidelity, where Elizabeth questions herself on whether or not she can trust him due to his constant dishonesty. Swift's line "And I can't trust anything now, And it's coming over you like it's all a big mistake" is what goes through her head when she discovers that John hides the details in which he is alone with Abigail. Throughout the play, Elizabeth notices a "fragile line" in her relationship plus she realizes it has already been broken, as for Puritans their relationship would only break by death yet hers broke due to betrayal. Towards the end each of us read that due to John not telling the Court about his relationship with Abigail, his wife Elizabeth pays for it. At this time Elizabeth knows information that could put an end to the trials but yet she will not say a word since John is affected by it. The line "Oh, I'm holding my breath, Won't lose you again", perfectly explains that Elizabeth put John's life before hers. The reason for it is because she knows that if the court found out of John's lechery he would serve time and Elizabeth does not want to lose him again, she lost him the first time because of Abigail but she knows that the second time it cannot be for the same reason.
Katie I really love the way you chose Taylor Swift to compare Elizabeth's Relationship between her and John proctor, as it allowed us to understand how fragile the relationship got towards the end of act 3 when john goes in for a kiss and she slowly back away. It shows us the way how Elizabeth is fragile and how the relationship is also fragile because if you don't connect like two atoms that positive and negative then how will you ever have a strong bond.
DeleteI really like how you chose lyrics that fit their relationship. You went into detail and fully explained how they are feeling. I like how you explained what Elizabeths emotions were and how heartbroken she was.
DeleteWow, this is so good!! I love this song and I think you explained it perfectly. I love the lyrics you chose and how you explained it I think it really tied back to the crucible!!!
DeleteI really love your use of Haunted when it comes to Elizabeths thoughts about John throughout the play. When I think of something thats haunted I think of it being cold, so to me this song really ties into the symbol of temperature throughout the play.

I hope you find some peace of mind in this lifetime
Tell them, tell 'em, tell them the truth
I hope you find some paradise (tell them, tell 'em the truth)
Tell 'em, tell 'em, tell 'em, tell them your-
I've been goin' through somethin'
One thousand, eight hundred and 55 days
I've been goin' through somethin'
Be afraid
In the end of Act II we see John Proctor; a man who has been betrayed by the society he resides in as well as himself. John has had an affair with Abigail and in turn he has directly caused his wife Elizabeth to be taken and falsely persecuted. In the beginning of the song Kendrick's wife's voice is heard speaking on the fact that she hopes Kendrick will find peace despite all of the hardships that he has faced and his willingness to accept that they even occurred in the first place. This is a direct connection to Elizabeth. When Elizabeth was being taken away she still held close to her love to John and her children; hoping that John will come and free her from the jails. Telling the truth is vital here, as John has not told anyone about his affair with Abigail yet in an attempt to withhold his image in the village. Little did he know, this is what will cause his wife to be taken away from him. In the second part of the song, Kendrick takes over highlighting the rage and sorrow that he has been containing for for a very long time. He is implying that he is going to release it all in upcoming songs in the album. John is the same as this. In the end of Act II John is seen with Mary; he is stricken by rage. His wife was just forcibly taken from him because of his own actions and the unreliable eyes of the so-called "just" court. He aims to direct all of his rage to the court and the girls, specifically Abigail, that have done this to his wife. He will release all of his pent up rage and finally tell the truth that was never meant to grow this unproportionally large in scale. He will expose every single one of those people, including himself, and he wants them to be afraid.
Amazing Connection! Your analysis effectively highlights the emotional connection and thematic similarities between these seemingly unrelated works. Insightful topics covered include self-reflection, betrayal, and maintaining hope in the face of hardship. The comparison acquires depth by highlighting the significance of the truth, the letting go of suppressed feelings, and the common goal of exposing injustice. I love how the essence of the song and the character's experiences combine.

ReplyDeleteSong: Right my Wrongs By Bryson Tiller
Lyrics: I've gotta right my wrongs.
With you is where I belong.
You've been down from the go.
Recognition is what you want.
And it's something that I should know.
Something that I should know.
All the things that you went through.
Girl I never meant to put you through it twice, no.
Tell me how can I right my wrongs.
Analysis: In Act II John and Elizabeth are having dinner together but the vibes are cold as Elizabeth is losing faith, afraid that she might be next to be jailed. As John won’t testify against Abigail. John feels like the environment is a courtroom as Elizabeth keeps judging him. John says “Let you look sometimes for the goodness in me, and judge me not.” However the guilt is showing in John as he repeats the adultery commandment as he knows he committed adultery with Abigail. Moments later Cheever shows up to the house with a warrant to arrest Elizabeth on suspicion of witchcraft when Abigail accuses her. John feels more guilty as he says “My wife will never die for me!”(pg80) because he knows that Abigail is accusing Elizabeth of witchcraft on purpose for vengeance on him. Bryson says “All the things that you went through. Girl I never meant to put you through it twice, no. Tell me how can I right my wrongs.” John may feel this as he has wrong Elizabeth twice and now her life is on the line because of the acts he committed. In the end of Act II John decides to go to court and force Mary to testify to prove Elisabeth's innocence trying to right his wrongs.
I agree with this song for Proctor, he’s trying to right his wrongs by confessing to Elizabeth about the affair, he’s seeking for forgiveness

ReplyDeleteSong: All too Well (10 minute version) - Taylor Swift
Lyrics:
And there we are again when nobody had to know
You kept me like a secret, but I kept you like an oath
Sacred prayer and we'd swear
To remember it all too well, yeah
Well, maybe we got lost in translation, maybe I asked for too much
But maybe this thing was a masterpiece 'til you tore it all up
Runnin' scared, I was there
I remember it all too well
Analysis: When Abigail and John had their reunion, John expressed how he felt about Abigail using the words, "Abby, I may think about you from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I'll ever reach for you again" (23). Not only does this show the false hope that was given to Abigail from this relationship but also the betrayal she must've felt. As a confused teenager, she felt love for the first time not knowing it was one sided. This connects to the song provided because the lyric, "you kept me like a secret but I kept you like an oath" relates to the relationship by showing how both people in the relationship felt about each other. John kept Abigail a secret while she was in love with him and "kept him like an oath". Another lyric that portrays their relation from All too Well (TMV) is "Well maybe we got lost in translation, maybe I asked for too much.." and I think it related to Abigail as she probably felt as she was being too "needy" and this thing between the two would've worked if she never spoke how she felt about his cruel actions towards her. These actions being sleeping with her and ghosting her , which is the internal conflict Abigail is with. The Internal conflict is her love for John Proctor.
I really like how you explained the lyrics by using a quote that Proctor had said and also went in depth with your reasoning. I think this song also relates to their situation and what has been going on between them.

Don't underestimate the things that I will do
There's a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch and it's bringing me out the dark
The scars of your love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love they leave me breathless
I can't help feeling
We could've had it all (you're gonna wish you)
(Never had met me)
Analysis : Through the beginning of the play Abigail thought that John Proctor loved her after everything they did together but as time passed she saw that he felt nothing towards her. He never loved her his heart would always belong to Elizabeth no matter what happens. She felt played after the last encounter they had where he basically rejected her telling her "Abby, I may think of you softly from time to time. But I will cut off my hand before I'll ever reach for you again. Wipe it out of mind.”. Abigail sees this as though he didn't care about anything that happened between them where opposite from this she saw a future with this man. After this her plan to get back at John no matter what the cost would be. Abigail developed this unhealthy obsession with John where she wants him to hurt more then she did for playing with her love. Abigail won't end the fight until John Proctor or Elizabeth get hurt.

“You ruined it now, I hope you can't sleep and you dream about it. And when you dream, I hope you can't sleep and you scream about it. I hope your conscience eats at you…”
Analysis:
John Proctor had an affair with Abigail and feels horrible about having an affair behind his wife's back. He felt guilty and had confessed about what he had done to Elizabeth where she fired Abigail as the servant. But, Abigail still loves him and still thinks they can get together. When Proctor goes to Salem, Abigail tries to get with him and tells him that the witches are all fake but he rejects her advances. He tells her that he was wrong for being with her and now is loyal to his wife. This enrages Abigail calling Elizabeth a “lying, cold, sniveling woman” (12) Due to her feeling Elizabeth being a roadblock in between her and John Proctor. She tries to get Elizabeth hanged in the witch trials. At first she accuses Elizabeth of witchcraft but was rebuttaled by Mary saying she has never seen any signs of witchcraft from Elizabeth. After that Abigail stages Elizabeth doing witchcraft by putting a pin in her own stomach. And she says Elizabeth has done witchcraft on her with a poppet Mary had given to Elizabeth. This was enough evidence to arrest Elizabeth of witchcraft and bring her to jail. This angers John Proctor and the song lyrics help demonstrate his feelings about Abigail creating this whole situation. In the song it states, “You ruined it now” Which is what John Proctor feels as he is saying she has ruined everything that Proctor had and ruined any chance of getting with him. With the lyric saying, “I hope your conscience eats at you…” it shows John Proctor is angry and wishes that Abigail will understand what she is doing and realize no matter what she will not get with him. The song shows how he wishes Abigail feels the guilt and pain he feels and is going through. In the line "I hope you can't sleep and you dream about it" it shows that John Proctor wants Abigail to go through the same suffering and restless nights that he might be going through. This represents the mental toll that John is experiencing as a result of the affair and its aftermath. The reference to disturbing dreams shows John Proctor wishes Abigail to face the repercussions of her actions even in her subconscious. The line “I hope you can't sleep and you scream about it” indicates intense inner turmoil and guilt John Proctor wants Abigail to bear. He wants her to face the emotional consequences of her actions, just as he did for his own mistakes.

I love how in the song it mentions a strong connection to characterization of himself(Eminem) and how in our book it strongly connects back to John and his realization of what he should've not done and had with Abigail. He has regrets as does Eminem throughout the song.
DeleteI agree with the analysis as it shows John Proctor's thoughts on Abigail after she frame/kill his wife using accusations of witchcraft. And then I can tell myself
Not to ride along with you
I had all and then most of you
Some and now none of you
Take me back to the night we met
I don't know what I'm supposed to do
Haunted by the ghost of you
Oh, take me back to the night we met
When the night was full of terrors
And your eyes were filled with tears
When you had not touched me yet
Oh, take me back to the night we met
I had all and then most of you
Some and now none of you
Take me back to the night we met
I don't know what I'm supposed to do
Haunted by the ghost of you
Take me back to the night we met.
Analysis: John told Abigail he doesn't love her anymore after their confrontation, making her feel betrayed. Abigail recalls their past "love" and wonders if it was real, however this turns a betrayal into strong jealousy towards Elizabeth, who gets to be with John while Abigail feels abandoned and alone. Through Lord Huron in his cover “Take me back to the Night we Met” mentions “When the Night was full of terror, and your eyes were filled with tears, when you had not touched me yet, Oh take me back to the night we met” Illustrates how Abigail is in deep loving care of John and can’t forget all the love they had, but is now met with the true fact that she won’t be as special as Elizabeth, due to her not actually knowing how to raise a family and knowing the ins and outs of love, care, responsibility, lastly maturity. Lord also mentions “I had all and then most you, some and now none of you” referring to how Abigail has lost all of John proctor and his presence/existence. Her love for John proctor will always be in her as the song mentions “take me back to the night we met” the complete obsession of the love they had but knowing of how Elizabeth’s name will always be in the way of their true love, lust, and affection. Although the story of Abigail goes farther than this because she goes through measures to accuse Elizabeth so that she could have everyone believing that she is a witch, however the real reason is Abigail wants to hide the fact that John”s love is for her and not Elizabeth.
Amazing song choice! It really shows a different perspective of Abigail as she is seen as a antagonist in Act 2 but it shows how she has been effected by John Proctor and is just in search of love. And her love for someone who doesn't love her back motivates her and makes her hate Elizabeth which is shown amazingly by the song!!

Analysis:
In Act III of The Crucible, as John Proctor grapples with the choice to show his secrets and techniques and strategies and that hold his partner, i belive this song connects with him a lot, lyrics of "Numb" thru Linkin Park. The strains "i've end up so numb, I cannot sense you there" like John's emotional numbness and internal confusion. The exhaustion described in "turn worntired so , plenty extra conscious" captures the weight of the picks he faces. The preference to be honest to himself, "Is be greater like me and be less which include you," shows John's conflict with societal expectancies and the worntired of his movements. The song encapsulates the inner war that John Proctor is in.

Analysis:
In The Crucible, Abigail and John Proctor, husband to Elizabeth, have an affair. Throughout this affair, Abigail has this huge obsession on John. She is in love with him and does not care that he is married. She wants to be with him and have a future. As time goes by, John realizes that what he is doing is wrong. He does not want to hurt his wife anymore and tells Abigail he wants nothing to do with her. Elizabeth finds out about this affair, and is very upset. I feel that these lyrics relate most to Abigails and Elizabeths conflict because they both love the same man. These lyrics can be something that Elizabeth is saying to Abigail because Proctor does not care about her but she has this obsession towards him. The lyrics that stood out to me was "I know you're used to him but you want something real" These stood out to me because it shows how Abigail is used to John and everything that he does but it was all fake.
I agree with your analysis entirely, their relationship was definitely nothing more than the one night. It seems very clear to us that John proctor doesn't care for Abigail and these lyrics greatly captures the connection you built. Love how insightful this analysis is, great work nusrat.

And watch you tolerate it
If it's all in my head, tell me now
Tell me I've got it wrong somehow
I know my love should be celebrated
But you tolerate it
While you were out building other worlds, where was I?
Where's that man who'd throw blankets over my barbed wire?
I made you my temple, my mural, my sky
When Abigail and Proctor talk about the state of their relationship John Proctor tells her that he remembers his time with her but tells her to forget everything that happened between them and move on. Abigail must’ve felt betrayed and hurt when he said this because was all the time they had spent together for nothing? And was all that so insignificant to him that he could just drop her and forget everything that had happened? In tolerate it, Taylor says “I know my love should be celebrated. But you tolerate it…Where's that man who'd throw blankets over my barbed wire?” Abigail longs for the love that he gave her at the beginning of their relationship and she shows him love and is willing to give him all of her but in the end, she realizes that her love for him is merely tolerated not reciprocated.

Analysis:
At the opening of Act II, John proctor and Elizabeth are sitting at the table talking and Elizabeth wants John to testify against Abigail but he cannot prove his allegation because Abigail told him when they were alone. After hearing that they were alone Abigail loses all faith in John which she lets him know and all he can do is feel guilty for what he has done. I wonder why John decided to hurt her in the first place if he was going to end up regretting it like how Rihanna did. Rihanna says “I don’t wanna hurt her anymore” and you can tell that John doesn’t want to hurt Elizabeth anymore either but he never should've in the first place. He is definitely feeling guilty because his moments of lust could potentially lead to the death of his wife.
What will happen? Will John find a way to save his wife? Or is it already too late?

Analysis:
I think this song matches perfectly if there were to be someone narrating Marry Warren at the time that she accused John Proctor of being the devil’s man. John is her boss and she feels scared because she realizes that John cannot protect her from the girls or the judges representing “he cant take care of you like this”, meaning that he cannot help her in this situation and this is where she realizes that she is on her own. She feels overwhelmed and ends up accusing John Proctor as a result of her emotions towards the girls, John, the Judges, Parris, and herself, “Lost in the heat of it all”. The whole situation is too much for Mary leaving her lost in her emotions.
I agree with you because it shows how Mary had been feeling overwhelmed about not being able to speak up but yet she later on ended up accusing John.

House of Memories - Panic! At The Disco:
"I think of you from time to time
More than I thought I would
You were just too kind
And I was too young to know
That's all that really matters
I was a fool"
Analysis:
The song matches perfectly with both Abigail and John Proctor's internal conflict. Act Two begins with Elizabeth and John Proctor conversing over the witch trial, where Elizabeth demands John to reveal the truth to the officials. John avoids this by saying he was alone in a room with Abigail, implying that the evidence isn't sufficient to prove anything. This however, strikes Elizabeth as she concludes that John has yet to be open with her, causing tensions between the two's relationship. The phrase "Those thoughts of past lovers They'll always haunt me I wish I could believe you'd never ruined me" refers to John's affair with Abigail, where John is constantly being haunted by the things he did in the past with Abigail, resulting in a conflict with Elizabeth. John reveals this when he states "I have gone tiptoe in this house all seven month since she is gone. I have not moved from there to there without I think to please you," (54) the sentence "I have gone tiptoe in this house all seven months" implies that his affair has gave him so much guilt that he has to compensate Elizabeth for seven months or more in order to cleanse him of his sin.
The song also applies to Abigail since she got her heart stolen by John Proctor.
The phrase "You were just too kind And I was too young to know" connects to Abigail getting rejected by John Proctor, to Abigail she thinks John Proctor is in love with her, but in reality he is just messing with her feelings. And due to her young age, Abigail is yet to understand love, as a result she decides to blame the cause onto John's wife, Elizabeth.
I agree with you Leo as Elizabeth and tensions John get stronger this song perfectly show John Proctor's internal conflict. I also agree how it also connected with Abigail how she was too young to know.

She's getting on my nerves
You don't love her
Stop lying with those words
x19 Words
Analysis: This song matches many character internal conflict throughout the book, but this song manly represents Abigail. This songs shows this a woman wanting to break the man and another woman up so she can have the man all for herself. This is also what Abigail wants. Since Abigail sleeps with John Proctor, Abigail thinks that John Proctor loves her and so she wants to kill off/"Break up" Elizabeth Proctor so she can have John Proctor all for herself. As the song said "That basic bitch leaves finally
Now I can take her man" Which shows that "woman" left and now she can take her man. Also when the song said "Stop lying with those words...Pacify her...She's getting on my nerves...You don't love her...Stop lying with those words...I can't stand her whining." It shows that she don't want her to exist in this world. All in all, This song represents Abigail. :D
*It also kinda shows John Proctor internal conflict since when the song said "She's getting on my nerves...You don't love her...Stop lying with those words." Which shows John Proctor internal conflict because in Act II they were arguing and like maybe when it said "She's getting on my nerves" Elizabeth is getting on his nerves and then questioning if he loves her or not as the song said "You don't love her" and feeling guilty of what he did now and he knows that Elizabeth Proctor didn't forgive him but Elizabeth Proctor showed no interest on John Proctor adultery, but in her heart she lies as the song said "Stop lying with those words." All in all, John Proctor also has a lot in common to this song. :D
I agree that song does matches Abigail and it shows her jealousy towards Elizabeth.

I think this song perfectly describes the situation between Abigail and Elizabeth. Abigail has shown signs of unhealthy Obsession to John proctor and because of this she takes out this anger through leashes of jealousy shown throughout how she portrays and envies Elizabeth throughout the crucible.

ReplyDeleteIs there someone else? -The weekend
Lyrics: Oh (oh), is there someone else or not?
'Cause I wanna keep you close
I don't wanna lose my spot
'Cause I need to know
If you're hurting him, or you're hurting me
If I ain't with you, I don't wanna be
Is there someone else or not?
Ooh, or not
Analysis: This song from the weekend matches Elizabeth Proctor in act 2, many things are going on with witches but also her husband has been distant. The reason why this song matches her is because throughout act 2 we see Elizabeth unsure whether her husband has cheated on her or not. She tends to doubt herself, when finally she gives in and has the courage to ask Proctor why he’s been distant. When she does she finds out that her husband has in fact cheated on her with Abigail. “I do not judge you. The magistrate sits in your heart that judges you. I never thought you but a good man, John – only somewhat bewildered.” This quote shows us how she’s became cold after finding out what he’s done and that guilt will always follow him for cheating.

I agree with this. I also believe that these lyrics apply to Elizabeth when it comes to the lyrics "If you're hurting him or you're hurting me if I ain't with you I don't wanna be" because throughout the crucible Elizabeth has shown how strong her love was for John. I also agree with you when you say that her husband has been distant and I believe the cause for this was guilt.

ReplyDeleteSong: "Cheerleader" by Ashniko
Song Lyrics:
Who do I have to kill to make everybody love me?
I want it, I'll win it, call it ambitious
…
I'm not a girl, I'm a swarm of bees
Wrapped in a skin suit, perfect teeth
God made me pretty, you made me mean
I brought a blade to the dance routine
Analysis:
In act 1, Abigail observes the power Tituba has over the adults after confessing to witchcraft. After confessing herself and receiving the same power over the rationality of the adults. Her and her friends then list many people they ‘saw with the devil’. The line “Who do I have to kill to make everybody love?” relates to how she’s willing to point the finger and have someone killed, for nothing other than her own selfish and personal gain in the matter. Another great example is how she believes by killing ELizabeth Proctor, John will love her after their talk. The line “God made me pretty you made me mean” can also relate to how she sees no wrong in what she’s doing, born a girl of the church, she’s only acting out as a result of John’s adultery, ultimately making her into a main problem in the story.

ReplyDeleteSong: Slime you out by Drake
Lyrics: July, that's when I found out you lied
August, it was "baby" this, "baby" that like you had your tubes tied
September, we fallin' off, but I'm still the man you tryna win over
October is all about me 'cause your turn should've been over
November got you moodboardin' for next year and you're single
December the gift-givin' month and now you wanna rekindle our year.
I Believe this captures different moments throughout Elizabeth and John's relationship. John tried to explain himself at first and after telling Elizabeth what he had done he attempted to be affectionate with her which she did not like. Later then , just like the lyrics they slowly started "Falling off" or drifting away. Elizabeth starts to think more about her feelings and as she continues to push John Proctor away after he committed adultery he then tried to "Rekindle our love" .(Drake)
